we see the truth slowly come to light, bit by bit, until the past actions of Oedipus cnnect with his present investigation. The following paper examines the mystery in this
story and discusses how the investigation of the mystery illuminates the meaning of the play. Mystery: Oedipus the King As would
be expected the primary mystery in this story is untaken by Oedipus the King. He is now a king and is confronted with the need to uncover the truth about
his wifes murdered husband, the former king. It is this mystery that slowly evolves through the story and it is this mystery that slowly allows us to see who Oedipus
is as he learns the truth. Because Oedipus is the lead character and because he is the king we, the reader, need to
understand if he is worthy of our respect and our sympathies in light of any disasters that may fall upon him in the story. It is an ancient tale and
in these respects we assume that we are faced with some kind of a hero, perhaps a tragic hero. But, we have to know, once again, if he is worthy
of our concern. If this story simply told of Oedipus as a king who is found guilty of murdering his father and
marrying his mother then we would perhaps have very little sympathy for him. And, Oedipus as a character would not engage the reader as an intriguing character worth noting. But,
because we are reading about how Oedipus is slowly seeking the truth we are seeing the situations from a far more personal and vulnerable position where Oedipus is concerned. We
