the average reader. This paper will include a brief overview of myocardial infarction, the pathophysiology of the disease, and the impacts on the body. Then this paper will
provide an overview of diagnostic procedures, treatment options and long-term changes that must occur in order to prevent a recurrence of the disease. A myocardial infarction, also known as a
heart attack, occurs when blood supply to the heart muscle is diminished significantly enough to impair heart function (American Heart Association, 2005). In order for oxygen to flow to
all of the organs of the body, the heart must pump at regular intervals and oxygenated blood must flow to the cells of the heart muscle, or myocardium. A
heart attack occurs when this blood flow to the heart muscle is diminished and the cells of the heart muscle are damaged or die. The impacts of myocardial infarction
are cumulative; loss of oxygen to the heart muscle cells results in cell necrosis (death), which then impairs heart function, which results in continued loss of oxygen to the heart,
as well as other vital organs. Diminished oxygen supply because of diminished heart function can result in organ failure, stroke and death. Diagnostic Criteria
Heart attacks are commonly evaluated prior to entering the hospital (emergency room, ambulance, etc.) and relate to a specific set of symptoms, which include:
shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, lightheadedness, fainting, left arm pain that radiates, and fatigue (DCI, 2005). Because myocardial infarction is caused by an arterial blockage in the
vessels that supply blood to the heart, determining the position of the blockage and the severity of the blockage is instrumental in the diagnosing and treating of this condition. When
