personality types in 1923 and spent the next twenty years studying and researching to devise an instrument that would complement Jungs theories (KnowYourType, 2008). Myers and Briggs wanted to make Jungs theories applicable and available to the general public (Adao, n.d.). Jung theorized that humans performed two basic functions in their lives, how we perceive things and how we make decisions (BSM Consulting, 2006). He also believed that there were two opposite ways of functioning in each of these categories: we could perceive things through our senses or through our intuition and we make decisions based either on objective logic or subjective feelings (BSM Consulting, 2006). While Jung believed we all use all four functions, we tend to use each one with varying frequencies and the one we use the most determines our dominant function (BSM Consulting, 2006). Each of the other three are used in decreasing frequency, or, the way Jung explained it, our "dominant function is supported by an auxiliary (2nd) function, tertiary (3rd) function, and inferior (4th) function" (BSM Consulting, 2006). Jung brought extroversion and introversion into the theories of personality types (BSM Consulting, 2006). People either introverted or they extraverted their dominant function type (BSM Consulting, 2006).
