including homewares, furniture, electrical goods, clothing for men, women and children, accessories and cosmetics. The firm, which has recently undergone an initial public offering; the former owners which were
a consortium lead by a US private equity firm who had acquired Myers in 2006 as when Coles Myers had announced the divestment and de-merger of the firm. However, the
firm now faces challenges, the IPO was the first major IPO in Australia and raised $2.2 billion, however as this was $2 billion below the target price it may be
argued that investors were aware of some of the challenges that remained in the market (Thomas and Thieberger, 2010). Many retail firms have failed in the 2009 recession, and there
appears to be a trend in Australia moving away from the department store. To assess the potential of the store and consider the best way forward the firms environment and
the way it competes needs to be considered. 2. External Environment The external environment may be considered with the use of a PEST analysis, this looks at political
influences, economic influences, social influences and technological influences. The political environment is tied in with the economy, the governments are actively engaged in policies to try and stimulate
the economy. Political influences are seen in terms of the supply chain, increasing numbers of bilateral trade agreements are facilitating the sourcing of input and finished goods from other areas.
