parents come from Burma and its always been important to them that I visit their homeland. Growing up, I can remember asking why our family did certain things differently than
my friends families, why we ate different foods, or celebrated different holidays, and the answer was always the same: once I got to travel to Burma, I would understand. So
there I was, a few weeks after my eighteenth birthday and I was finally living up to the legacy, visiting my parents homeland on the other side of the world.
It had been a trying time, too. I was there not just to sightsee, but to volunteer to teach English at a local public school, so I had spent the
last month struggling to get my lesson plans together, all the while keeping up my grades at school and continuing to volunteer at the Buddhist temple my family attends. It
had been rough, but in some ways I have to admit it had also been a bit of a welcome distraction: you see, a few weeks before I decided to
travel to Burma, my grandfather Chan died. It was something we knew was coming for a long time, but it still hurt, and it didnt help that every time I
volunteered at the temple afterwards, I had to see that portrait of him looking back at me from the altar. Grandfather Chan had been a monk, and loved by everyone,
and the people at the temple just couldnt stop reminding me how lucky he was to go the way he did, at an old age, peacefully, surrounded by friends and
