and what lessons it teaches about social activism. It also suggests how a teacher might reinforce these lessons for students. Discussion Howell Raines is white, yet he chose to write
about the black experience. Many critics felt that he had no business doing so, but as it turns out, he was an outstanding choice. He did not write a book
attempting to describe what life in the South was (is) like for blacks, instead, he interviewed over 70 people who had been involved in the fight for civil rights. There
are some famous names here, like Rosa Parks, Dick Gregory and Julian Bond, but there are many more that are unfamiliar. There are whites here too, some of them as
prejudiced and ugly as they were during the civil rights era. But Raines has let them all speak for themselves. He provides a bit of biographical information on each person,
then simply reproduces the interview. By doing so, he brings this period of unrest in America to vivid life. For students today, the 1960s might as well be ancient history.
Yet, that decade and the struggles that defined it, for Civil Rights, Womens Rights and the Vietnam War, shaped the nation as it is today. In order to understand where
were going, we have to know where weve been, and Raines shows part of that struggle in vivid terms. There are many lessons that can be taken from this
book, including some unsavory ones about the nature of prejudice and its persistence. But the book also speaks to the impact an individual can have; the importance of commitment; and
