friends each week at the local Starbucks. I also am a member of the Republican Party and I do volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity. I also work at the
New Jersey DMV. In evaluating my group membership, it seems obvious that each of these differ in nature in respect to the importance they play in my life. My family
and church are quite important to me, but while I have a job, the work relationships are less important in the scheme of things. In evaluating these group memberships, it
is helpful to characterize them as either primary or secondary groups. Primary groups are usually informal. There are norms and roles that are agreed upon for example, but there is
nothing in writing (Byrn & Lie, 2005). Secondary groups are less personal, and are generally larger and more formal (Byrn & Lie, 2005). In light of the fact that I
have many group memberships, it is important to evaluate them in terms of relevance. Which are primary and which are secondary? The United Methodist Church, the DMV, Habitat for
Humanity and the Republican Party are secondary groups that define who I am, but the primary groups that mean the most are my family and friends. Each of these
groups have unique roles in my life. The United Methodist Church and Habitat for Humanity are two organizations that fill a soul need. When I volunteer or go to church,
