just to "look good" to the adults, or to gain favorable treatment in school. This definitely was never the case, but I never had any success in convincing them of my true not-so-devious rationale behind spending so much time at the library: reading was fun. As I got older and met other people outside of my family, I realized that plenty of other people shared this view, and had for thousands of years. While I do enjoy academics a great deal, Ive never particularly regarded reading as a means to some academic end; for me, it is quite simply an activity that is its own reward. I think the primary joy in reading for me comes when a book is able to reflect some truth about humanity in a way that is utterly convincing because of its "holding a mirror" up to the real world in the way it presents its characters and story. One key passage from one of my two favorite books, Dostoevskys "The Brothers Karamazov", is a great example of this. The very first chapter of the book concerns itself with introducing one of the main characters, Fyodor, the patriarch of the troubled Karamazov family. He is characterized by Dostoevsky as something of a scoundrel, someone who manipulates emotion, and who is primarily concerned with gaining profit for himself while putting forth as little effort as possible. This makes for an effective character, but is also something of an exaggerated caricature; we may recognize these traits in other people, but other people are generally more complicated than just having this singular aspect to their personality. However, in the final passages of the chapter, Dostoevsky writes of the character enduring the death of his wife, and relates conflicting stories from the people who knew him: some say ...
