health culture of Browns family and shows what it was like for him and his working-class Irish parents, portraying the values, ideas, and motivational factors that were pivotal in the
life of Brown and his family. When Brown was diagnosed, his parents were told that he would be a vegetable. However, this pronouncement proved to be completely wrong, as
trapped inside his disabled body was a active and intelligent mind. The only part of his body that Brown could move effectively was his left foot. The film shows Brown,
as a young boy, managing through sheer force of will to spell out "mother" on the floor, using a piece of chalk that he held between his toes (Lappin and
Sheridan, 2005). Browns parents, as well as his numerous siblings, always showed him love and acceptance. Mrs. Brown appears to have never subscribed to the idea that Christy was
a "vegetable" and incapable of learning. The narrative makes it clear that it was largely his mothers loving care that enabled Brown to formulate a sense of self-worth and integrity.
In a revealing scene from Browns childhood, his mother, who is visibly pregnant, lifts Christy and thrown him over her shoulder to carry him upstairs to his bedroom. While
she grimaces, indicating that this is not an easy task fro her, she never gives the slightest sign that she feels that caring for her disabled son is a burden.
She is the first to recognize Browns attempts to communicate. Browns father has more difficulty accepting Christys condition as well as Christy as an individual. The film implies that
