understand various elements about their personality, their fears, their hopes, and their attitudes towards themselves and the world. The following paper presents a tutorial of sorts, as it relates to
the heritage or history of a particular individual. My Heritage: Tutorial The individual being examined is Luis. Luis was born in New
York, in the Bronx and is considered second generation, as Luis parents immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic. At this point in the students narrative, or history,
they could present stories of the family history they learned as a child, as well as language spoken at home, and any form of discrimination they may have remembered as
a young child. When Luis was 12 years of age the family moved from the Bronx to the suburbs of New York City. They were able to move because
the father had become quite successful in the furniture selling business. Again, at this point the student could write on many things relating to the move and the fathers success.
Was the student, for example, part of the business? Did Luis find an interest in his fathers work, or was Luis embarrassed or indifferent? The student could indicate the feelings
and experiences of moving as it related, for example, to leaving friends behind or making new friends after the move. Was the move an exciting one or a depressing one.
Luis, at the age of 18, graduated high school and joined the Army. This is a very powerful time in a persons
life and the fact that Luis joined the Army indicates that perhaps this was something the individual had always wanted to do, or they felt they had no other choice,
