one of the most interesting authors of all time. His stories appeared in the New Yorker as well as in other publications during the 1950s. Cheever soon became known in literary circles as the "Chekhov of the suburbs" because his writings were primarily placed in the Westchester suburbs. Other locations he commonly included was his vacation house in New England and Italy. Cheevers work is interesting not just because of its setting, however, but also because of his delineation of the drama and sadness that characterized life. U.S. suburban life, in particular, jumped from his pages with valiancy yet at the same time with a pathetic air about it. Cheever was particularly adept at delineating between the dream of suburban life that preoccupied so many of his day and the reality of what really transpired in the suburbs. Cheever is simultaneously compassionate and understanding when confronted with moral dilemma in the chaos of modern life. These qualities make him my favorite author. Many of Cheevers stories are based in Massachusetts. This is not surprising given that is where the author grew up. Massachusetts is also where Cheever first experienced heartbreak. That heartbreak came over the fractionation of his family that occurred when his father left his mother, Cheever, and Cheevers older brother after financial demise the father experienced with the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Those financial losses and the departure of the father toppled the family from its affluent lifestyle.
