films depicting cultural families are "Soul Food" which depicts the lives of an African American family, and "My Family" which depicts several generations of Mexican Americans. In the following paper
we examine the two films as they relate to various themes. The paper discusses which film would best represent family development stages, conditions of family values and beliefs, health risks
apparent in each film, and implications for nursing in the films. Family Theory In terms of family development stages, both films have something to offer. For example, "My
Family" brings us several generations of one family, illustrating many different stages. "Soul Food" presents us with one time frame, but with different portions of the family involved in different
stages. If one or the other film needed to be used as a form from which we could examine family development stages it would have to be "Soul Food," only
because "My Family" was not incredibly cohesive in presenting us the various stages of development. "Soul Food" was also chosen due to the fact that we see three generations, and
different family stages. In all honesty, however, neither truly gives us the real conditions as they relate to the different stages of family development. It seems that just when
one gets to that point, there is something that changes or something that does not fit well. For example, we could get a good look at the patriarch and matriarch
of "My Family" but the focus seems to be chopped up with pictures of another family member in another stage. They never stick to one stage long enough to truly
give you a taste of the stages. And, with "Soul Food" we are presented with people in various stages that almost seem unbelievable. For example, the family with children do
