in a constructivist approach to education that draws on the cognitive learning theories of psychologists such as Jean Piaget. Constructivism has been defined as a teaching philosophy that concentrates relating
subject material to the learner in a way that relates it to their own previous experience and aids them in investigating the material (Clemons 9). As this suggests, I believe
that information, in order to be fully assimilated by the learner, must be constructed in the mind of the learner, as the child builds on previously experience and knowledge. As
this indicates, I favor a student-centered approach to pedagogy in which the teacher is a facilitator, aiding students and guiding them in their own individual journeys of learning. However, while
I favor students being allowed to pursue their own interests and paths, this does not mean that I am totally against structure. Society expects everyone to have a certain storehouse
of common knowledge and skills. Part of the role of public education is to ensure that this body of knowledge is passed on. For example, while it is important that
students understand the logic and rationale behind the multiplication tables, it is equally important to their future progress in math that they should memorize the tables so that math facts
are something that they do not have to stop and think about in order to use. This, and spelling, are one of the few instances in which rote memorization--that old
standby of traditional pedagogy--remains useful. I mention this because there are certain things, such as common instances of irregular spellings in the English language, that everyone should simply "know." It
is the teachers role to make the learning of the facts seem "do-able," plausible and even fun for elementary-age students. But while certain curricula subjects require this approach, this is
