US this may be seen as the main market, and mutual funds do have an important role, but it was not here they developed. If we look at three countries
such as the UK, the US and Canada there can be noted both similarities and differences in terms of the development of the industries and the structure of the industries.
Mutual funds may be seen as starting in the UK during the 1860s, these were the first trusts that were able to offer the benefits of large scale investments
that were open ended and can be compared to todays investments. The ability was for small investors to be able to affordably invest aboard. IN 1868 there was the publishing
of an investment prospectus by the Foreign and Colonial Government Grist which said "The object of this trust is to give the investor of moderate means the same advantages
as the large capitalist in diminishing the risk of investing in foreign and colonial government stocks, by spreading the investment over a number of stocks" (quoted Chabot and Kurz, 2004).
These were the fore runners, and the mutual fund has developed in the UK in the form of a Unit Trust. However the form of the investment in the UK
can be seen as flowing on fro the development of the US where the modern format of the mutual find was developed. A mutual fund developed in the early
part of the 20th century is an investment that is a pool of money from many investors which has been put together and then invested in a range of investments.
