rights and human rights organizations as well as a large number of authors have charged that Muslim women are oppressed. The most visible piece of evidence to these people is
the burqa and the veil. Muslim women are required to wear this robe that covers their entire body with one skinny slit for their eyes. The burqa in itself
may or may not be oppressive, depending on the reasons it is worn. However, there is definitive evidence of women being beaten and otherwise abused by the men in her
life, most especially, her husband. This is most definitely oppression. Oppression, the adjective, is defined as: being burdened psychologically or mentally (WorldWeb Online Dictionary, 2008). Oppress, the verb, is defined
as: subjecting others to harsh or cruel form of domination; to be the source of worry or stress to someone else (Encarta(r) World English Dictionary, 1999); to "keep down by
unjust use of ones authority" and "Cause to suffer" (WorldWeb Online Dictionary, 2008). These definitions attest to the fact that Muslim women, at least some of them, are oppressed.
Cudd (2006) also define oppression as harm to others who are constrained by the oppressor. She goes on to explain that "oppression is a normative concept that names a social
injustice" (Cudd, 2006, p. 23). This means that oppression is perpetuated through some sort of social institution or through the practices and norms of social groups (Cudd, 2006). This type
of oppression can be against an individual or it can be against an entire population of specific persons (Cudd, 2006). The victim may not even think of themselves in terms
