it seems as though one culture will see an action as insulting or important while the other culture has no concept of what just took place. A simple gesture can
be taken as a message of some kind that is completely unknown to the other individual. And, while knowing all the little details of one culture or another is all
but impossible for a variety of reasons, it is important to understand at least something of anothers culture when dealing with them for personal or business reasons. The following paper
examines a hypothetical situation, presented by the student requesting this paper, and examines what the significance of various actions may well be. Muslim Customs
The scenario involves an American and a Muslim. The American meets with a Muslim and offers him tea. The American sits with both feet flat on the
floor. The American then asks the Muslim individual if he would like a smoke, and if the Mulism minds if the American smokes. The Muslim individual begins to move their
chair closer to the American and the American then moves his chair to a comfortable distant, keeping a particular distant at all times between the two. Both individuals begin discussing
Muslim extremists and the discussion becomes heated with the American getting a bit angry and slamming his right fist into the palm of his left hand. The American also begins
to stroke his mustache. The questions involve what may have been done by the American that may have offended the Muslim and what customs may have been performed correctly.
