by K. Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction Aging is difficult, particularly in a culture that worships youth and tends to toss
older people onto the scrap heap. This paper considers the way in which reactions to phrases about aging inform a persons current thinking. Discussion The prompt for this paper is
an exercise: finish the sentence "When I am old I will..." and then reflect on what has been revealed. The trick here is not to think too hard about this,
but to write the first thing that comes to mind. So, "when I am old I will deny it." I will "hate it." I will "regret not traveling more." I
will "regret not following my heart." I will "regret my lousy relationship with my mother." I will "still be jealous of thin people." I will "never give up." That seems
to be enough to start with. The theme running through most of these off-the-cuff observations is regret: no one wants to get old, no one wants to look back on
a life that wasnt fun and fulfilling; no one wants to remember bad relationships or a life-long struggle with weight; but also, there is determination as well. What this reveals
is the often observed fact that in the United States at least, the culture is so obsessed with youth that people who are much past 40 simply cease to exist.
Whether the denial of age is a based on an internal need to be accepted or external judgments from others, it is difficult to face getting older in a culture
