she sounded upset, which was odd because Captain Vanyxs cool is legendary--she never gets upset. Shes also legendary for being one of the finest captains in space: shes never
lost a person on any of her voyages, and people fight to sign onto her ship, because they know shell get them home. It was the tone of her voice
that had me wide awake before she finished speaking. "Im here, whats wrong?" "Come to the bridge on the double, Doc." "Im on my way." Anyone who tells you that
space ships look like the Enterprise is still Earthbound. The real deal is that ships are enormously expensive to build, launch and maintain, so theyre designed to haul as much
cargo as possible while keeping the crew reasonably safe. This means no spacious bridges, no huge viewports, no Ten Forwards or holodecks-just tiny corridors and cramped quarters and machinery stuffed
into every possible space. The TV people did get one thing right, though: the Dirty Lie was relatively clean. It had to be; dirty clothes and reeking garbage make the
atmosphere unbearable fairly quickly, and nobody wants to live in a toilet for the endless months it takes one of these tubs to make the run from the Moon orbiter
to the mercury mines on Pluto. So the ship was neat. Or it was until today, when someone decided that Second Officer Murdock has outlived his usefulness and terminated
