WASTE For The PaperStore, May 2000 properly! The Journal of Soil and Water Conservation defined waste "as discarded material judged to be of no value for ordinary or normal use" (1996, 6). The waste generated in todays world is very diverse and includes "household refuse, agricultural, mining, and industrial byproducts" (Journal of Soil and Water Conservation 1996, 6). Thus, as soon as something has no economic value for the purpose for which it was originally intended, it becomes waste and it is discarded. Many of these items, however, do have value because they can be used for other purposes or component parts may be used for other products. Some waste is classified as hazardous because there are chemicals or other agents that make the waste a potential health or safety danger. For example, chemicals contained in some products can be distributed into the air or water, thus contaminating these. Rubber tires become a very definite hazard if they are burned; toxic chemicals are released into the air causing illness and worse. Hazardous waste includes such things as: * Batteries, which can contain lead, nickel and cadmium, mercury. * Various electronic equipment containing lead and arsenic. * Printed circuit boards containing arsenic. * CRTs containing lead and barium. These are all parts of computer equipment and obsolete computers are being dumped in landfills by the millions. The EPA identified specific problems of municipal waste and their effects. There are approximately 16,000 open and closed landfills, sludge and refuse incinerators and municipal surface impoundments for nonhazardous waste nationwide (EPA 1998, htm).
