much misinformation and pure fiction. In actuality, we know that mummification did, and in fact does exist even today in our modern world. Mummification is not a means
of producing monsters as are featured in horror flicks, however. Rather, the process of mummification has been a critical component of various religions. By far the most predominant
of religions that utilized mummification, however, was the ancient Egyptions. Even in those ancient times, mummification was a process characterized more by the exactness of science than by a
morbid preoccupation with death. Interestingly, the English word "embalming" is traced to the practice of mummification which involves placing the body in balsam
or resin, the final stage of preservation. The term "mummification" is derived from a Latin word, "mumia". Although this word was first mentioned by Dioscorides in the first
century A.D. it was mentioned in regard to a black substance referred to as bitumen which was found oozing from the earth in certain locations. The term would later
be applied to the Egyptian dead who had been embalmed. This application was undoubtedly in recognition of the use of bitumen as a critical component in the embalming process
from the Twenty-sixth Dynasty onward. Natural forces, animals, and other aspects of the Egyptian environment played a very important role in
the religious beliefs of the people. The Egyptians believed that the gods had created the world as they wanted it to be, that it was perfect and would never
change. They developed the understanding that the gods intended for the people to join them in the afterlife, upon the end of the mortal life. Consequently there were
