how, and why, multiple personality disorders are very real. Multiple Personality Disorder One of the most famous stories of multiple personalities is Sybil, the subject of a book
and a film. In this situation a girl suffered great abuse as a child and supposedly developed 16 different personalities, two of them male. Her story is perhaps the most
well known and yet it is also a story that should be examined for it stands as an example of how there may be multiple personality studies that may not
actually be multiple personality disorder. One author asks, "even if Mason was abused, did she really split into 16 identities, which Wilbur claimed to be able to summon at
will? Some researchers say that Mason probably wasnt a multiple before she met Wilbur" (Kantrowitz 66). There is apparently a condition wherein a psychiatrist can work with a patient
and in trying to help them uncover issues actually create problems (Kantrowitz 66). One psychiatrist, who worked with the legendary Sybil, stated that she was actually "a brilliant hysteric, highly
hypnotizable and extremely suggestible" (Kantrowitz 66). This particular doctor also believes that Sybils personalities were actually suggested in therapy which relied on hypnosis and a great deal of sodium pentothal"
(Kantrowitz 66). In these respects it seems possible that there are people who do not actually suffer from multiple personality disorder, but
