According to Scala (2003), multimedia describes the combination of technologies which allows several different types of communication to be accessed at a single point. A computer which includes CD-ROM and DVD would be an example of multimedia, as would a mobile phone which allows video download or Net access. Multimedia combines different types of audio and visual presentation and can be used for education, entertainment, business communication and so on. As International Demographics (2003) points out, ownership of multimedia technology is one of the ways in which the affluence of a household can be judged, and so from this point of view it could certainly be seen as a mark of elitism. The possession of any kind of multimedia technology immediately puts the owner into a particular socio-economic category, and the sophistication of the technology itself allows the demographer to make further subdivisions as regards socio-economic status and hence, social class. This kind of assessment can also be made on a much wider level, in the sense that more affluent nations will tend to display a high percentage of multimedia owners in relation to poorer ones: technological sophistication is a fairly good indicator of per capita income. So, it is certainly true to say that multimedia is a useful rule-of-thumb for assessing affluence, whether at a local or a global level.
