Old Country: "ayb". There was no translation. People in this country couldnt know the depth of shame, of this Mahmoud was certain. There was no taking
her back, she was ruined. This passage offers a very vivid expression of multiculturalism and how it relates to both
the characters and to this story. This passage illustrates the fathers frustration over the marriage of his daughter to the piano tuner, James. This highlights the cultural gap
that existed between the two men. The father argues for the ways of the Old Country while the man his daughter loves is oblivious to these ways, because that
is not his cultural background. And so, the two virtually speak entirely different cultural languages and therefore cannot understand one another. This
passage shows just how important cultural identity is to Materias father. Although he has long been away from his homeland, he still very essentially identifies with it and he
values the ideals that shaped his upbringing. He states plainly that his distaste for James has nothing to do with his lack of wealth or the fact that he
isnt a Catholic, but it has everything to do with his ignorance of the customs that are such an inherent part of their family. He identifies this feeling in
