to the development of multiculturalism in many different areas including home, office, and school. This paper examines some of the issues children face in multicultural settings, and what that
means for counselors working in those fields. Multicultural Issues in Education Multiculturalism and diversity are terms that usually are thought of in connection with race, ethnicity or country
of origin, but that is too limiting; multiculturalism should also include disabled children, the deaf, and gay and lesbian youth (Sanchez, 1995). Because of the tremendous change in the student
population, it is necessary that educational programs address multicultural issues (Sanchez, 1995). These programs (which include counseling programs) must integrate multiculturalism into all aspects of the educational curriculum, which
means more than simply adding a course or giving a lecture, or having a "multicultural fair" for a day (Sanchez, 1995). Students really need to understand the other culture
and the way in which its members view the world; its not necessary that they agree with the other viewpoint, particularly if theyre uncomfortable with it, but they have to
realize that an opposing view, or one they disagree with, must still be accepted. When children are given the opportunity to integrate multicultural issues into their lives, they
will develop respect for others from different backgrounds (Sanchez, 1995). To do this, "creation of models that stress the development of awareness and cultural sensitivity skills needs to take
place," alongside the development of traditional educational models (Sanchez, 1995). Counseling children in this environment requires that the counselors themselves develop the same sensitivity as anyone else in the
program. One of the problems associated with the development of a multicultural society is conflict, which can erupt on the playground, in the classroom, after school-anywhere that two cultures
