looks at the ways in which inclusion of multicultural education principles can benefit health and physical education instruction. First of all, the term "multicultural" refers to "the diversity
of identifiable groups within this human community" and multicultural education seeks to "acknowledge and account for the commonality and individuality" that is evident among these groups (Pewewardy and
Frey, 2002, p. 77). As this suggests, multicultural education includes not only the approach of the teacher to the subject matter, but also the cultivation of multicultural competence among students.
Multicultural competence provides students with a better understanding of how every individual within a society both "affects and is influenced by others," and, therefore, contributes to the "on-going definition and
creation of culture" (Kuster, 2006, p. 33). Looking at the topic from the perspective of the teacher adopting a multicultural perspective, there is a great deal of empirical data to
support the conclusion that for health education to be effective, it should be culturally based (Geron, 2002). Ethnic and minority health beliefs can differ from those of mainstream culture. Also,
a multicultural perspective naturally inculcates the idea that teachers will get to know their students. There is considerable empirical evidence that "cultural, socioeconomic, ethnic, gender and age differences" have a
direct impact on students attitudes toward both physical education and health-related behaviors (Stetzer, 2005, p. 26). By understanding the cultural perspectives of students, a teacher is better equipped to design
learning experiences that fit with cultural expectations, and also target dissimilarities, as well as expose students to new concepts so that they can gain positive attitudes toward developing healthy
