can have a lasting impact on the individuals concerned as well is the employer. By understanding the potential problems in a multicultural environment it is possible to overcome some of
the barriers which are presented by it. In this example and Italian started work at American facility. The initial stages a mutation appeared to be effective, the Americans and the
Italian got on well. However, after a few weeks the relationship appeared to deteriorate. On casual observation it appeared that the issue was that of a personality clash. On closer
inspection the issue is not a clash of personalities but of communication breakdown which can be traced to the cultural differences. It is only by understanding the cause of the
difficulties any solutions can be found. To consider the way the problems emerge we have to consider the way in which mutation takes place. Communication is defined by the dictionary
as "The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behaviour" (Dictionary.com, 2007). However, for communication to be effective it needs to be understood by the
people whom the ideas are being communicated to. There is a communication failure when the message is not communicated and the meaning understood correctly. There are three main methods of
the communicating failing, this may be a breakdown with the sender, a breakdown with the method or a recipient breakdown. In terms of cultural differences the problem is that the
message being sent out by the sender is interpreted differently by the receiver. The problems started after the Italian had been working facility to about two weeks. Getting on well
