has developed serious smoking related problems. For those hospitalized with lung disease in particular, however, finding a means to assure long term smoking cessation is imperative. Smoking cessation
results in improved lung function and in symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. It also is associated with a decrease in sputum production. Smoking cessation programs
initiated in the hospital environment are believed to be more impressionable on patients and this impressionability can translate into long term success.
Intervention Studies in Nursing Education Authors Jonsdottir, Jonsdottir, Geirsdottir, et. al. (2004) report on
the results of a long-term multicomponent individualized smoking cessation intervention that is particularly suited for inclusion in nursing education. This program was modeled around the Transtheoretical Model, a model
that recognizes the importance of the relationships that can emerge between care provider and patient and how these relationships can influence outcome (Townsend, 2000).
This study is advantageous in many other ways as well to the nursing educator. It utilizes methodologies that are within the reach of most nurse educators.
