This 8 page paper examines the message in this well known Shakespeare comedy. Despite the humour, the plight of the two female characters is serous. The paper looks at the role of hero and Beatrice, the relationships they have and how they are conducted to extrapolate the messages that may be taken form the play, such as the need for equality and the role of women in society. just as the more recent 1993 film version of the play, filmed by Kenneth Branagh reflects the 1993 audience with clever editing to increase the humour. However, the play may
also be seen to project an important message that is as relevant today as it was then, the genderization of society and inherent sexism that exists. It is important to
realise, that although a comedy, the comedy is at the expense of the two main female characters, Hero and Beatrice, where, from their perspective there is little humour. Despite this
the play is about love and relationship as well as the battle of the sexes. The story itself cannot be seen as original, reflecting tat of Ariodante and Ginevra
in Ariosto, but with different secondary information. The main relationship is also relatively weak, despite to apparent ardour of the Claudio, who swears love for Hero. Yet the emphasis is
not that of romance or poetry, but that of wit and prose (Wells 296). The main characters are these young lovers, but
they are unconvincing, there is little substance to the relationship, indeed, Claudio has made sure that Hero is an heiress before swearing love for her. It 8s also worth noting,
that despite the clear and eloquent words, t no point in the pay do we see Hero and Claudio alone together. In this relationship Hero is also playing the role
of the traditional compliant and submission woman, a role that is cast by society. The relationship that results from this basis of convention and acceptance is one that in insubstantial
and may be compared to other relationships that Shakespeare has portrayed, such as Bianca and Lucentio from the Taming of the Shrew. The romantic values that they are meant to
