existence today. This may lead many to wonder why people would continue to live in the region surrounding the volcano considering the dangers involved. However, despite the potential dangers, the
volcano actually provides many benefits which the people of the region truly enjoy. The following paper examines Mt. Etna and illustrates the advantages associated with the volcano. Mt.
Etna According to one author, "Living beneath Mt. Etna, Europes largest and most active volcano, requires an occasional act of faith, which is why three ranks of electric candles blaze
brightly before the life-sized statue of St. Anthony Abate in the sanctuary of the local church...most people in this Sicilian village believe the statues face was darkened in 1886 when
their ancestors placed it in the path of a surging flood of red-hot lava that was on the verge of inundating Nicolosi. Miraculously, the lava stopped at St. Anthonys feet"
(Hundley K1594). The dangers become apparent when we see that a short while ago, "A spectacular series of eruptions...has again put Nicolosi in peril. Millions of cubic meters of
lava have spewed from at least five separate fissures in Mt. Etnas southern flank" (Hundley K1594). There was one particular stream of lava which was as close as 2 1/2
miles from the village. "Loud explosions and earthquake-like tremors have rattled the crockery and the nerves of Nicolosis 6,000 inhabitants" (Hundley K1594). The volcano puts on a display similar to
