story is the tale of Mrs. Wilson, who wages a battle against uterine and breast cancer, and loses. This paper examines the way in which Mrs. Wilsons character changes as
she undergoes her battle with the disease. Discussion Jones begins his story with a moment that everyone can relate to, and which we all fear: the news that we have
a serious health problem. In Mrs. Wilsons case, its terminal cancer, but she is already aware of it and the diagnosis comes as no surprise. The fact that she already
knows that shes sick speaks to two things: one, she is very intuitive and two, most of us have a sort of "built-in" mechanism that tells us when something is
seriously wrong and when its nothing. Here, she is aware of the problem before the doctor even delivers the unwelcome news. Its important that we take a moment to look
at the stages of grief, because they come into play in this story, though in a subtle way. This phenomenon was identified by psychologist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, and is familiar to
most people. When we suffer a loss, or even an intense disappointment, we go through a process of grieving. Such a process can also take place if we face a
serious illness. The five stages are generally thought to be denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance ("The stages of grief"). The story opens in the doctors office as Mrs.
Wilson hears her diagnosis and thinks "Hey, the bad news wasnt really a surprise! She ... knew. Of course, you always hope for the best. She heard but she didnt
