being who she was at that moment. However, the choices given to her are, in her mind, both very undesirable ones; how she makes a choice between the two
and why she comes to this conclusion makes for an extremely interesting paper. MRS. TURPINS CHOICE Mrs. Turpins imaginary dilemma is that Jesus is giving her the choice of
being one of two people: either a "nigger or white trash." She pleads with Him to let her wait until there is another choice available, but He tells her
she has to choose now. Mrs. Turpins response is "all right make me a nigger then - but that dont mean a trashy one." So Jesus would have made
her a neat clean respectable Negro woman. Herself, but black. Mrs. Turpin thinks that she would like the option of being somebody else; perhaps her life is a little
boring and so she occupies her time fantasizing about having another choice. But that would make it too easy on her, to just simply choose to be somebody else.
She feels she doesnt have the right to make an easy choice like that. Her life hasnt always been easy, so she does not expect to get out
of it that easily. This is remedied by the fact that she is given a very difficult choice to make. Does she want to be black, or white trash?
Mrs. Turpins first thought is that both of these are just as bad as the other is. This is a very difficult choice, after all. What can
she do? She decides that she doesnt want to choose between these two bad choices, so she would have begged to wait until there was another choice available.
