best. This paper argues that the protagonist of the story, Louise Mallard, does not love her husband. Discussion The story is savagely ironic: Mrs. Mallard, who has a heart
condition, is told as gently as possible that her husband is dead, killed in a railway accident. She breaks down immediately, then, alone, recognizes a new emotion: sheer joy. At
last she can be her own person, live her own life and do as she pleases, without having to defer constantly to her husband. She feels guilty about
feeling that his death has set her free, because her society teaches her that it is her duty to love her husband; in fact, at the time the story was
written (1894), women had no choice about what they were going to do with their lives. They were to get married, have children and then provide a well-run home for
their husbands and children. Their wishes and desires didnt matter in the slightest; they were the property of the men in their lives who disposed of them as they wished.
Mrs. Mallard is one of those women who has been shuffled off into a life that she finds unbearable, not because her husband Brently was cruel or mean, but simply
because this is not what she would have chosen for herself. There is no hint that she was in love with someone else or that she might not have eventually
