Research Compiled by K. Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction Macbeth and his "fiend-like queen" are two
of Shakespeares most memorable characters, but they change over the course of the play. This paper considers their characters before and after the murder of King Duncan in Act II.
Discussion First of all, murdering the King when hes a guest in their house is a crime that is particularly heinous. The law of hospitality is sacred and
of great antiquity; a person should be able to rest comfortably and without fear in such circumstances. That they choose to murder Duncan in what he believed to be a
safe place is particularly gruesome. The action of the play is set in motion by the predictions of the three Weird Sisters, who hail Macbeth as "Thane of Glamis" and
then, "Thane of Cawdor" (Mac. 1.3.48-49). He is already Thane of Glamis, but Cawdor is still alive, or so he thinks, so the prediction is puzzling. Then the witch
goes even further: "All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!" (Mac. 1.3.50). .He is stunned by these predictions but remains skeptical, until other arrive and address him as Thane
of Cawdor. When he protests that Cawdor lives, he is told that he was a traitor and is condemned and that Macbeth now has that title (Mac. 1.3). This
is the incident that sets him to thinking about murder; the witches were correct about his titles as Thane of Glamis and Cawdor; he believes they must be right about
