presents material about a subject that children might shy away from-religious faith and the tradition of hymns-within the context of a larger story. It is also written largely for
a Christian audience since the hymns that are discussed are found in Christian hymnals, but it could provide an introduction to the hymns for children of other faiths. The book
is the third in Douglas Bonds series about hymns; the first was Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers and the second, Mr. Pipes and Psalms and Hymns of the
Reformation. Mr. Pipes (his name is a play on words, obviously) is an elderly British organist. In the first book, we meet him, Annie and Drew, the two
young Americans who will appear in all the books. In this tale, the kids are spending the summer in a small English village and are bored stiff. Mr.
Pipes introduces them to the history of hymn writing, and helps them nurture their "new found faith" through the church music (Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers, 2005).
The saga continues in Mr. Pipes and Psalms and Hymns of the Reformation. In this book, Mr. Pipes, Annie and Drew travel through Europe, learning about the Reformation and the
hymns that were written during that era (Wheeler). Each chapter in the book discusses a different hymnist (including John Calvin and Martin Luther among them), and "includes details of
the places where they lived and how they made their mark on history" (Wheeler). The book thus provides some history of the Reformation as well as examining the hymns
