ones pride and ones prejudices. Most of the characters within the novel possess a sense of pride to one degree or another, and they all possess some form of prejudice.
One of the main characters who offers a good examination of such human elements is Mr. Darcy. The following paper examines the pride and prejudices possessed by Mr. Darcy as
they relate to the same themes within the novel. Pride Despite the fact that pride and prejudice go hand in hand in this novel, we discuss the
two separately. We note, in the beginning of the novel, that pride plays an enormous role in this story. We see that pride is perhaps the root, or the foundation,
for all prejudice as well, for with their pride the characters make judgments and assumptions and thus find themselves prejudiced about one thing or another. There are many different
types of pride and levels of pride within the story. For example, Darcy is perhaps the most obviously proud man and he is proud due to ideals he has been
raised with. He is a man who is proud because he is wealthy and thus has social position. It is his position in society that allows him to feel he
is better. We note some of his pride when we see him at the party where he quickly dismisses Elizabeth, stating "She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt
me" (Austen Chapter 3). In this we see him as a very arrogant and prideful man who dismisses Elizabeth primarily because she has no money. Granted she may not
be a dashing beauty, and perhaps because of this she is worth no notice, but if she had money and social standing he would surely have paid attention. His pride,
