defy analysis and beggar description" (Machlis 205). In the summer of 1788, during the darkest period of his life, Mozart composed his last three symphonies, nos. 39, 40 and 41,
in the space of little over six weeks (Machlis 213). The following analysis is of Mozarts last symphony (K. 551), no. 41, popularly known as the "Jupiter" (Machlis 213).
The opening of the Jupiter consists of a loud "flourish," which is immediately followed by a soft "pleading" answer. The commentator for BBC Radio points out that
this work perfectly showcases Mozarts genius, as he reconciles apparently irreconcilable musical elements. However, Mozart achieves his study in contrasts so perfectly that the listener hardly notices what is actually
