the situation. The San Francisco 49ers was the first "major league professional sports franchise to be based in San Francisco" (History of the
San Francisco 49ers, n.d.), coming into being within the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) on June 6, 1944, which was D-Day in Europe during World War II. The NFL had
rejected the overtures of Tony Morabito for a football franchise in San Francisco, but the AAFC provided opportunity. The conference and the 49ers began play in 1946 after the
end of the war. The AAFC lasted only until 1950, but the NFL agreed to accept the already-established team. Candlestick Park opened
in 1960; the 49ers moved there from the much older Kezar Stadium in 1971 (Monster Park, n.d.). As is the case with much of San Francisco, the aging stadium
is physically constrained by the peninsula on which it is located. The 49ers had been searching for a new stadium site for some time when the organization announced in
2006 it would abandon its search within the confines of San Francisco to move to Santa Clara, less than an hour away from San Francisco. 2. Identify the NFL 49ers within
