The impact of globalisation has seen many labour intensive jobs move to developing or poorer countries where labour and associated costs are lower. The result of this has been a
migration of the traditional manufacturing sector jobs and a change in the profile to a large level of service sector employment as well as job related or making use of
high technology. Education needs to move with the times to keep providing school leavers with the skills needed to protect their future and give them increased opportunities. The trend
in education and the desire of government has been to push forwards the use of second level education. This is post compulsory education where the school leaver will have a
choice. From a government labour market perspective this increase level of education may be important in order for the workers to be available for the jobs that will require higher
skills or knowledge levels, whether it is providing the resources for home grown star-ups and expansion or to attract foreign direct investment (Haralambos and Holborn, 2003). As well as
meeting the needs of the labour market this also needs to meet the needs of the future workers in that market opening up opportunities for them in terms of job
experience, wages or some other form of motivations and satisfaction, otherwise the market needs will not be satisfied. However, evidence does appear to suggest that second level education, or post
compulsory education can open doors and give school leavers increased opportunities and better potential, but it does not always meets that potential. In order to understand the way it may
