content and suggested viewership. Many contend that rating systems are nothing more than censorship and that while content such as sex is censored heavily, content with even more disturbing
societal connotations such as violence is less often censored (Mathews PG). The rating system has been under revision for the past several years. Even the recent renovations in the
nations movie rating system, however, has received little praise for its provisions but has received heated criticism for what many say is an ineffective and inappropriate system.
The issues surrounding movie ratings are, of course, two sided. Many criticize the rating system as being ineffective because it was designed by
the movie industry itself. They contend this is the equivalent of allowing the fox to watch the hen house. According to organizations like the PTA, the rating system
is simply a casual attempt at addressing the rating issue. Opponents to the new rating method say that it is simply a reflection of the medias concern with its
own profits rather than the well-being of their viewing audiences. Hefner reports:
"The system, whatever its details, is at heart a spin-doctoring plot against rising unhappiness about violent and smutty prime-time offerings".
He says that the system needs a considerable amount of additional work and makes the observation that the ratings appeared to be age-based
rather than content-based (Hefner PG). While age is an obvious concern in the rating system, so too is content. Indeed, age and content are integrally intertwined.
