and the game begins. These men are not concerned with the grace or beauty of their movements; they are concerned with winning. Nevertheless, in obtaining this goal, their movements take
on dance-like precision. In particular, I am intrigued immediately with the complex movements of the pitcher. The pitchers goal is to throw the ball with precision and speed. He
stands erect with his body at a ninety degree angle to the batter, looking toward the catcher for instructions. His hands are held close to this body and there
is a sense of tension and drama in this moment. The pitchers body rotates around the foot that he keeps firmly planted on the mound (Barker, 2005). The ball is
held over his head by one fully extended arm, rather like a rock to flung from the end of a string (Barker, 2005). Just a rock launched from the end
of a long string has more angular momentum than the same rock launched from a short string, the taller the pitcher, the greater his advantage. The pitcher makes his
move and drives the pitch first from this legs, rather than his arms. Each part of the pitchers body flows into the movement necessary to propel the ball. It flows
up his body from the legs, then the hips, shoulders, arms, wrist and finally the fingers as the ball is released from the pitchers extended arm. This all occurs incredibly
fast and is perfectly fluid. Barker (2005) indicates that the as each part of the pitchers body approaches full extension, the next part in the sequence begins to move,
