is the sale of mobile telephones, in 2005 there was an increase of 40% on the 2004 levels that were shipped, making a total of 146 million phones shipped by Motorola (Business Week, 2006). In terms of global market share this was also an increase, Motorolas share of the market at the end of 2004 was 15.4%, by the end of 2005 this increased to 19% and was seen as staring to edge closer to the market leader; Nokia (Business Week, 2006). Part of the reason for this surge was the development of the RAZR handset and the way that this has been developed with the addition of complementary choices, such as different colours and new middles of a similar style such as the SLVR and Q (Business Week, 2006). If we want to look at the overall picture and the way that this increase in sales ahs added directly to the performance of Motorola and aided indirectly with the rising of the perception of the brand name we need to look at the financial results. In 2005 the sales demonstrated a large increase, up from $31,323 million in 2004 to 36,343 million. The gross profit also increased form the 2004 figure of $10,497 million to $11,777 in 2005 (Motorola, 2006). The operating profit also increased, but demonstrated the level of competition with a rise from $3,132 million to $4,696 million (Motorola, 2006). Figures may indicate the way in which there is an increase in sales and profit, but the real measure of performance can be wit the use of ratios analysis.
