why. Yet, there are many misconceptions by the public in terms of motive. Some people erroneously think that motive and opportunity are very important elements in solving a murder case,
but the truth is that sometimes, motives are very difficult to discern. Some motives are outright illogical and sometimes, hard to fathom. For example, the cannibals like Jeffery Dahmer and
the fictitious Hannibal Lecter are difficult to explain. In discussing this topic, there are four psychological motives for crimes, which should be given attention. The first of these is the
crime of passion. Samenow (2004) explains that a crime of passion refers to a crime, where a person who is normal in every respect, loses control and commits a crime.
The crime is something that he did not plan, and generally committed against someone he knows (Samenow, 2004). In some way, this is a motive that makes sense. Sometimes, it
is the case that an ordinary human being becomes angry and perhaps he or she becomes angry enough to think that they want to kill another human being. Premeditation may
arise quickly as an individual begins to consider for example, picking up an object and tossing it at the target of his hatred, or perhaps he decides that he will
inject his victim with enough heroin to kill. These ideas do not require much time to implement, but do involve some forethought. In essence, if such crimes are carried through,
they may be considered crimes of passion. Yet, it is a misnomer to think that someone who loses control once in a while is generally a good person. Samenow (2004)
