turns into something of a murder mystery. It is a story that can be explicated, and is explicated, in many different ways due to its intricate nature and astounding plot.
The major element of the plot involves the fact that Emily supposedly killed her lover years before she died and yet continued to sleep beside him after his corpse had
rotted. The following paper examines possible motives and meanings in this murder scenario. Motive and Meaning: A Rose for Emily According
to the student requesting this paper there are many critics who see Emilys crime as something that speaks of defiance and success on the part of Emily at being defiant.
In essence, this argues that Emily, who was ultimately controlled in her life as long as her father was alive, was frustrated at being controlled and kept within a particular
social place. She was seen as the matriarch of a time gone by in the eyes of the townspeople, and she had never had a chance at love until the
man came into town. One assumes that he wanted to leave and Emily, in her successful act of defiance, killed him. She was triumphant.
While this may be one way of looking at the story, and the character of Emily, it seems to lack strength in light of the fact that Emily
was perhaps never of any mental stability that would recognize triumphant defiance. Triumphant defiance normally denotes a strong and gradual progression towards an act. While Emily surely was a woman
who had built up to a point where she could not take anymore the truth is that she kept this mans dead corpse around and this is not necessarily illustrative
