further and will fit in well with the existing strategies. 2. Introduction Starbucks is a well known coffee chain, its success is
not based only on high quality coffee, it the result of the differentiation the chain has been able to achieve with the experience that they provide for the customers. Key
in the provision of this experience is the input from employees; where employees are motivated they will have a more positive attitude and more positive behavioural traits (Huczynski and Buchanan,
2010, p266). Furthermore, in a service industry, which includes firms such as Starbucks, motivated happy staff are likely to provide a good service creating happy customers (Heskett et al, 1994,
p164). The human resource management (HRM) model of Starbucks is often cited as an example of good practice due to the relatively high level of employee retention compared to
other firms in the same industry. Starbucks had a turnover 65% for shop floor employees and 25% for management; in an industry where employee attrition is between 150% and 400%
and management attrition levels average 50% Starbursts has a superior performance1. Despite this superior performance, which may be an indication of higher motivation levels, there is still room for improvement.
