makes it important to be aware of and understand the cultural background. Geert Hofstede identified five dimensions that different cultures adopt: 1. Individualism/Collectivism (IDV) which is about the emphasis placed
in individual versus collective accomplishment (McGinnis, 2005). 2. Power distance Index (PDI) is about how a culture distributes power. High power distance means there are few interactions between employees and
managers; low power distance means there are frequent interactions between the two (McGinnis, 2005). 3. Masculinity/Femininity (MAS) has to do with values. Masculine cultures emphasize material things while feminine cultures
emphasize quality of life and relationships (McGinnis, 2005). 4. Uncertainty avoidance Index (UAI) refers to the degree of comfort one feels with risk and uncertainty. Cultures that are low in
uncertainty avoidance prefer things to be structured and stable; employees may want more direction from managers. Cultures who score high on the uncertainty culture dimension are comfortable with ambiguity and
people prefer broad directions from managers (McGinnis, 2005). 5. Long-Term Orientation versus short-term orientation (LTO) is about values and perseverance. Values related to long-term are thrift and perseverance, values related
to short-term relate to fulfilling obligations, and traditions (Hofstede, 2009). This last one was devised by Chinese scholars and was not part of Hofstedes original work but he has included
it. On a scale of 1 to 100, West African cultures scores are: IDV = 17; PDI = 82; MAS = 41; UAI = 50; and LTO = 11 (Hofstede,
2009). We can see that West Africa in general has a culture that includes high power distance, and moderate uncertainty avoidance as well as masculinity. Their scores suggest an emphasis
