All organizations have some sort of motivational program, whether it is one that is planned and implemented or it is more informal as is the case in my very small
companies. The question is when does a motivational program become manipulation. There are people who consider any kind of formal motivational program manipulative. Barbian (2002) reported a study that
revealed 78 percent of employees said it was important to them to be recognized for their good work by their managers. Over 90 percent of managers said that recognizing their
employees increased their motivation and 84 percent said it was important to provide non-monetary recognition (Barbian, 2002). There are times when motivation becomes manipulation. It is important to know
that motivation comes from within a person. Managers can only offer a situation in which employees will find motivation. It is possible to entice someone to do something they might
no otherwise do but any effects will be temporary and the person could become resentful (Barbian, 2002). Companies offer incentives and rewards for certain levels of performance that may be
more manipulation than motivation. Most researcher conclude they do not bring about permanent, long-term changes in performance (Barbian, 2002). It helps to understand the difference between motivation and manipulation. There
