are issues of accountability to either shareholders or other stakeholders. In all cases we can argue that key elements of the process are the motivation leadership and team building skills.
If any of these are missing then the efficiency of an organisation is likely to be lower when compared to a similar organisation where the skills are present. Furthermore, when
we look at the way in which efficient companies have managed to gain competitive advantages, including cost advantage, it often relies on the element of human capital (Porter, 1985, Mintzberg
et al, 1998). The empirical evidence is undeniable. Numerous studies have indicated employee attitude is key to increasing or maintaining higher level of performance and in turn the
attitude is impacted by motivation. The first of these studies was by Mayo with the Hawthorne studies. The Hawthorn studies looked at a
group of workers who were placed in marginally improved working condition, this group of people demonstrated an increase in productivity. This starts to give credence to the view that working
condition have a direct impact on productivity. However, the studies would also show that when the study group suffered a decline in working condition their productivity still improved, proving that
it was the special attention the study group received which increased the productivity rather than the actual conditions. This theorised that the relationship between
employer and employee, and between employees would impact on both the quality and productivity of the workplace. It showed that any environmental changes, could, in the short term improve work
