English expansion into the so-called New World occurred in response to a diversity of factors. One of the primary
reasons, however, was that England was largely depleted of resources and the New World offered the hope of replenishment. The goal was not just to survive, however, but to
profit as a result of the exploitation of the resources the Americas promised. England entered the race with other European countries to accomplish this goal and, in fact, to
procure new land for the establishment of colonies for those British citizens that wished to relocate to the new land. An equally important reason was to use the freedom
the new lands offered to celebrate their religious beliefs. One of the initial reasons for the European focus on the Americas during the
1500s was that European access to the ancient silk roads that had facilitated the acquisition of exotic Chinese resources for Europe as well as the dissemination of the Christian religion
to Asia had been cut off by the Ottoman Turks. Europeans hoped to find another access point through the Americas. Columbus, in fact, first reached the shores of
the "New World" while in search of a passage to Asia. If he had of been successful Spain would have greatly profited.
