Content theories focus on human needs and how people respond in terms of their own individual needs. Examples of content theories include Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, McClellands Achievement Motivation Theory and Herzbergs Two-Factor Theory (Romando, 2007). Process theories focus on the thought processes that are involved with or that drive a persons behavior (Romando, 2007). Examples of process theories include Adams equity theory, Vrooms expectancy theory, goal-setting theory, and reinforcement theory (Romando, 2007). There are two primary forms of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is internal, within the person, e.g., being motivated simply by doing a good job; and extrinsic, which is based on some sort of external reward, such as praise or a bonus.
