1991, which was the start of the third year that her son Jimmy had been attending preschool and Fling is called in for a parents/teacher conference. The preschool teacher expresses
her concerns about Jimmy, his recent aggressive behavior and how he communicates with teachers using catch-phrases from videos (Fling 17). The teacher explains how Jimmy would become enraged if
a child sat in "his" chair or played with what he regarded to be "his" toy (Fling 17). After hearing these initial concerns, which confirmed Flings own worst fears that
something was wrong with her sons development, it took six years before Fling and her husband would have a definitive diagnosis, Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of autism.
The reader can easily see why Fling was able to shrug off the sign that appeared early on that Jimmy had developmental problems. His language skills were normal; he was
obviously intelligent. Asperger Syndrome (AS) is characterized by poor social skills, repetitive motor movements, and a childs insistence on rigidity in terms of routine and scheduling. Jimmy, in many ways,
seemed normal, but he made no friends in preschool, and had trouble understanding and absorbing the details of social life, such as making eye contact. It would be six long
years before Jimmys parents even had a definitive diagnosis of AS. Once Fling and her husband had a diagnosis, they found that experts were of little real help. Fling comments,
"I learned that doctors can and should be challenged" (Fling 88). During the time that Fling was searching for answers, she does garner some strategies from teachers, especially from
special education teacher Debbie Dono, who helps Jimmy learn to read facial expressions, Fling formulates many strategies herself that serve to help Jimmy learn how the basics of human interaction.
